"Philanthropy plays a critical role in all democracies, particularly through support for civil society organisations, enabling them to continue to play their key role in reinforcing an effective democracy." 

Growing local philanthropic giving in support of a robust and sustainable civil society is a foundational pillar of Inyathelo’s work. Individual giving is becoming the biggest combined source of donor money in South Africa and philanthropists are playing a critical role in supporting and participating in the development of innovative solutions to our many social problems.

Inyathelo Philanthropy Awards

An annual celebration of remarkable individuals who have used what they have to leverage sustainable social development initiatives in South Africa. The awards provide us with the opportunity to run campaigns throughout the year to highlight the incredible stories of people who are working to improve the lives of others and contribute to longer term socio-economic development in our country. Private Philanthropy Circle (PPC) 

From 2011-15, Inyathelo served as the secretariat for an informal network of individual philanthropists, local trusts and philanthropic foundations whose aim was to build and profile private philanthropy in South Africa, the Private Philanthropy Circle.  In 2015, this entity became the Independent Philanthropy Association of South Africa, a membership-based organisation which advances, promotes and supports independent philanthropy in South Africa. 


Philanthropy Service Providers Network

Consists of individuals who provide financial, legal, advisory and management services, as well as consulting and technical support to philanthropists, trusts and foundations. Inyathelo was asked to play the role of secretariat for the network and hosts regular meetings where members share expertise, ideas and discuss industry-related issues such as professional codes of best practice, monitoring and evaluation, and the legislative environment around tax for foundations, donations and philanthropic spend.
