Civil Society Resource Hub

Inyathelo is home to a multi-purpose hub and sector sustainability centre, in the suburb of Woodstock, Cape Town. It is believed to be the only such facility in Africa. It was made possible by the Atlantic Philanthropies, and Inyathelo’s own resources, and opened officially in 2015.

The hub offers a comprehensive range of resources, training, support and services to contribute to the long-term sustainability and independence of the non-profit organisation and civil society sector.

The facilities include offices, open resource areas and conference/meeting spaces, with a common area that offers a coffee bar station and seating that encourages discussion and informal touch points. There are also meeting spaces for group work; the Book Lounge for reference material; and the Funding Finder to conduct preliminary prospect research.

Inyathelo’s own financial sustainability model is based on diverse sources of income, growing a reserve fund, fees for services, training and consultancies, and sales of selected publications. The addition of the hub has reinforced this sustainability, as the organisation initiated the rental of office space, hot desks for short-term rental, conferencing space, and parking. This income has covered rates, levies and maintenance costs, and capital to contribute to financial sustainability.

The premises are not only beautiful, as they showcase South African art, design and photography, but are modern and extremely efficient with state-of-the-art audio- visual and IT infrastructure. The flexibility of the space suits both small and large groups, and also caters for concurrent engagements.

Since the Covid-19 pandemic, Inyathelo has enhanced its communications facilities to ensure seamless operations for online learning, webinars and conferences. The facility is also equipped for loadshedding with seamless power inverters.

This reflects Inyathelo’s suitability to serve more clients beyond Cape Town and South Africa’s borders.
